Tabanka

Overview

Discover Tabanka, a vibrant Trinidadian restaurant at 1645 S State Rd 7, North Lauderdale, FL 33068, United States, where Caribbean comfort food, Indian-influenced curries, street snacks, and roti come together in an easygoing neighborhood setting. From a food blogger’s perspective, Tabanka stands out because it stays focused on unmistakably Trinidadian flavors rather than watering them down for a generic audience. The result is a menu built around curry, tamarind, shado beni, pepper sauce, chickpeas, pumpkin, and freshly prepared breads.

The menu offers plenty of variety without feeling unfocused. Current prices include Doubles for about $3.75, Boneless Curry Chicken meals around $17.25, Bake & Shark about $18, and Curry Goat around $19.25. Roti wraps, rice meals, aloo pies, pholourie, vegetarian plates, macaroni pie, stewed chicken, shrimp curry, weekend breakfasts, and desserts round out the selection. Takeout, delivery, seating, free parking, credit-card payments, highchairs, wheelchair accessibility, beer, and wine are currently listed.

A first visit to Tabanka in North Lauderdale should begin with the Doubles. Two pieces of soft fried bara surround seasoned chickpeas, while tamarind, culantro-based shado beni, and pepper sauce let diners control sweetness, herbiness, and heat. The texture is soft, saucy, and satisfyingly messy. The Infatuation singled these out as essential, describing them as fluffy, slightly sweet, and remarkably easy to devour.

The Bake & Shark is another signature dish worth ordering. Fried shark is tucked inside warm fried bake with lettuce, tomato, onion, garlic sauce, shado beni, and tamarind. The contrast between crisp fish, soft bread, fresh vegetables, and tangy-sweet sauces makes it one of the restaurant’s most distinctive plates. Current delivery platforms also rank it among the most popular items.

For something heartier, try the Curry Goat Meal with paratha. Slow-cooked goat brings deep, savory flavor and a tender texture, while flaky paratha is ideal for scooping up the curry and accompanying potato or pumpkin. Curry chicken and curry shrimp are equally strong options; one customer called both meals “top notch” and specifically praised the roast pepper sauce for taking the food to another level.

The atmosphere at Tabanka is casual, lively, and unmistakably Caribbean. Located in a strip mall, it operates more like a serious neighborhood food counter than a formal dining room, with an assembly-line ordering setup that keeps service moving. Restaurantji describes the vibe as similar to a proper Trinidadian “liming” spot, while friendly owners and staff receive consistent praise.

The main limitation is portion perception: a few delivery customers feel certain curry meals are small for the price, while others consider them fair given the quality. For anyone exploring the best restaurants in North Lauderdale for distinctive local dining experiences, Tabanka deserves attention for its doubles, Bake & Shark, curries, fresh roti, and unmistakable Trinidadian character. Call +1 954-933-1307 and visit hungry for a flavorful Caribbean meal with plenty of personality.

Tobanka in North Lauderdale was perfect for Boss’s Day with 3 friends! The food was absolutely amazing, bursting with vibrant flavors. The atmosphere was cozy and authentic, with warm service and genuine cultural vibes. A must-visit gem for a delicious, memorable meal! Should have taken the before picture. I am ready for a nap lol

Beautiful and clean restaurant. Service excellent. Doubles so fresh. Curry chicken, pumpkin, and rice (not a fan of, but passable) Altogether, experience was great.

Sunny isles

The doubles here is piping hot, tasty and transports you back to Trinidad. It’s as if you’ve having a doubles at the side of the road or something. And….the aloo pies are just as good. I got a curry goat special with paratha to go and sat down for their daily lunch which consisted of white rice, callaloo (which didn’t taste anything like how it’s made in the islands… a huge disappointment ) and stew chicken. This restaurant is beautiful inside, very dark, but cozy and has amazing staff. They are well stocked with drinks, candy and preserves from the Caribbean. My only regret is that I didn’t order a bake and shark… next time for sure…lol

I had an incredible experience at this Trinidad restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious—authentic, flavorful, and freshly made. I ordered the doubles and chicken roti, and both were outstanding. The doubles were perfectly spiced with soft, warm bara and savory channa, while the chicken roti was hearty, tender, and packed with flavor. The service was just as impressive—friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Highly recommended for anyone craving real Trini cuisine!

Tanaka is a taste of authentic Caribbean food! I tried the doubles and the bake & saltfish, and both dishes were delicious and flavorful. The service was friendly and fast, and the quality of the food speaks for itself. Was my first time here and I’ll definitely be back!
